For the first time in its history, the award for the
greatest contribution to Japanese baseball went to a
man born outside the country, when Chiba Lotte Marines
manager Bobby Valentine was named winner of the
prestigious Shoriki Award.  Valentine led his Marines
to an overwhelming 4-game sweep in the Japan Series,
winning its first Japan championship since 1971.
